Parenting

In-Home Parent Education
The In-Home Parent Education program focuses on the prevention of child abuse by identifying and responding to the needs of at-risk families who lack support.  Through weekly home visits and classes, our staff provides the parenting skills and training necessary to help families achieve stability and self-sufficiency.

Our in-home parenting class is a 10 to 12 week program that consists of:

  • Weekly 1 hour visits in the parent’s home
  • Parent skills assessment before and after
  • Lessons and assignments to assist in achieving goals

We teach a variety of subjects including:

  • Positive discipline
  • Family communication
  • Self-esteem
  • Problem solving
  • Child development

Parenting Classes
Several times throughout the year the Parenting Education Department teaches a parenting class that is open to the public. The cost for the class is $35 for an individual and $50 for a couple. If you need childcare, there is limited space available in the nursery, so call ahead to schedule time if you will need it.

The class covers a variety of topics, including parent roles and styles, nurturing yourself and your children, self-esteem, child development, improving family communication, developing responsible children, positive discipline, and problem solving.

To sign up for this class, call Sally at (801) 773-0712, Kay at (801) 771-4642, or drop by the Clearfield Main Office.

Parents as Teachers (PAT) Program

The Parents as Teachers program has four main parts:

Personal Visits
Parents as Teachers program is an in-home parenting program.  The parent educator visits once a week, bi-weekly, or monthly as needed.  Families can stay in the program until the child goes to kindergarten. During these visits, parent educators share age-appropriate child development information with parents, help parents learn to observe their child’s development, address parenting concerns, and engage the family in activities that provide meaningful parent/child interaction and support the child’s development.

Group Meetings
We have a monthly group meeting that helps parents connect with other parents, learn about child development, and have fun. Parent group meetings provide opportunities to discuss information about parenting issues and child development.  Parents learn from and support each other, observe their children with other children, and practice parenting skills.  Parents are given opportunities to develop leadership skills by assisting with the group meetings.

Screenings
Parent educators are required to conduct annual developmental, health, vision, and hearing screenings for early identification of potential developmental delays and/or health, vision, and hearing problems.

Resource Network
Parent educators help families identify and connect with needed resources and overcome barriers to accessing services. Programs take an active role in establishing on-going collaborative relationships with community agencies and organizations that offer additional family services.

Healthy Families
We are also starting a new program for first-time mothers called Healthy Families.  We will use all the elements from the Parents as Teachers program, but it is targeted to new moms.

How Can I Apply?
For more information about the Parent Education department or to apply to one of our programs, please contact Angela at (801) 773-0712 or send an email to angela@familyconnection4u.org.

How Can I Donate or Volunteer?
Parent Education department has an Eagle Scout Project opportunity repairing the sprinkler system, landscaping around the building, and painting lines in the parking lot. This project can be broken down any way necessary to fit the skills and hours of the individual scout’s project.  Contact Angela Ward at (801) 773-0712 to discuss the details.

We are always in need of baby blankets, diapers, wipes, baby items, blocks, balls, and other educational toys.  These make great Eagle Scout and Young Women’s projects.

We are also seeking someone willing to write a computer program that would monitor and categorize a client list.  This would be a great project for a student or intern.

For more information about helping the Parenting Education department with any of these projects, contact Angela Ward at (801) 773-0712 or angela@familyconnection4u.org.
